Reviewing investment paperwork at home

Nobody needs an investment. People need a house deposit in five years, school fees in ten, or an income that outlasts them. The investment is just the vehicle, so we start with the destination.

Start with the purpose

Money you'll need within a couple of years usually belongs in cash, whatever the markets are doing. Money with a longer horizon can afford to ride out the bumps in exchange for better expected growth. Before we talk about funds, we agree what each pot is for and when you'll want it back.

That single step removes most of the classic mistakes: investing the emergency fund, holding a decade of savings in cash, or owning three funds that all do the same thing.

Risk, explained properly

Every investment can fall in value. The honest questions are how far it could fall in a bad year, whether you'd cope financially, and whether you'd sleep. We use plain scenarios rather than jargon: here's what this portfolio did in the worst recent year, here's what that would mean in pounds for you.

You choose a level of risk with your eyes open, and we build the portfolio around it, spread across assets and regions so one bad story never sinks the whole plan.

"They asked what the money was for before they mentioned a single fund. That told me everything."

ISAs and tax wrappers

The same portfolio can behave very differently depending on the wrapper around it. ISAs shelter growth and income from tax. Pensions add relief on the way in. General accounts fill in when allowances are used. We put the right money in the right wrapper, in the right order, and keep using the allowances each year so the tax saving compounds along with the growth.

What it costs

The first conversation is free. If we go on to work together, our fees for advice and ongoing reviews are set out in writing and agreed before any work starts. Fee structure to be inserted from Quilter-approved disclosure.

The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested. Tax treatment depends on individual circumstances and may change.

Put the money to work.
